Elevan O'Clock #53 Josephine Searles - Bon Bon



Josephine Searles has created a show called "Bon Bon" which is part of the Melbourne Cabaret Fringe Festival 2019.  The show is based around different types of (insert the one you call them) Lollies/Sweets/Candy.  As someone who has recently pledge their devotion to the Milkbar cookbook and all its sugary delights this is a show I'm sure that will thrill my tastebuds.

Elevan O'Clock #51 Lauren Innis-Youren - Hold My Hummus , The Secret Life of a Stubborn Soprano




Lauren Innis-Youren calls herself a "Stubborn Soprano", but that stubbornness has meant that she has been able to conquer the adversity that "life" has put in her path.  Thankfully she is stubborn and also very talented.  Her show "Hold my Hummus - The Secret Life of Stubborn Soprano" is part of the 2019 Melbourne Cabaret Fringe Festival and you can catch it at The Butterfly Club between June 24 to 29.  

If her Stubbornness got her this far,  I'm really excited about where it is going to take her!

In this mini-episode I talk to another of the Mr Boylesque 2019 finalists -Astro.  We met at the Miss Burlesque Victoria 2019 finals as the doors were opening so there is some background noise,  but you still hear Astro's artistic intentions loud and clear.

Elevan O'Clock #49 - Mr Boylesque 2019 Part 1



Mr Boylesque Australia is an annual competition to determine who will wear the crown for the next year.  This years competition is an extremely diverse group of performers,  all of whom have something unique to say.  In Part 1, I talk to three of the performers (with a follow-up episode to be released soon.  While they may be very different in their styles, they all celebrate the expression of self and most importantly want to entertain.

Elevan O'Clock #48 - Trio of Dips



The Trio of Dips are friends who met at work and bonded over their love of musical theatre.  They decided to turn their late night game of parodying musicals into a show that mines their dating life for all to enjoy.  We not only chat about the development of the show  but also about our mutual love of the Andrew Lloyd Webber's show CATS.

Elevan O'Clock #47 - Just Joshing - Sugarbabies A Boylesque Musical

Sugarbabies - A Boylesque Musical is the creation of theatre performer/boylesque/all round nice guy Just Joshing (his funny and flirty instagram moniker -  @_just_joshing).  In the show Josh blends his two loves - Musical Theatre and Burlesque - to create a show that is full of big band musical numbers and the tease of burlesque.  We chat about what is the appeal of both golden era musical and modern day social media.

Neil Triffett is a Melbourne based creative who has a show in the 2019 Melbourne Comedy Festival.  His show explores the concept of Misery,  it may not seem like the cheeriest of topics but when you mix humour with songs played on the ukulele you know you're onto a winner (ok I'm a sucker for anything with a ukuele)

Elevan O'Clock #45 - Loretta Smith - A Spanner in the Works


Loretta Smith is an author who has written "A Spanner in the Works" The story of Alice Anderson and Australia's first all-girl garage.  Alice Anderson was an entrepreneur and pioneer who established the first motor service in Australia run entirely by women. 

Alice's story has never been widely told,  UNTIL NOW.  And Loretta, who faced her own challenges during the decade long research and writing , has ensure that this woman will not be forgotten.

Jamie Boiskin is a menstrual activist! She has taken her own experience and turned it into a show as she is determined to get more conversation to be had by everyone.  She wants us all (yes men included) to talk about menstruation, endometriosis, and polycystic ovarian syndrome. The sooner we talk, the sooner we can get the conversation into the 21st century. You remember Sophie Joske from an interview about her 2018 Melbourne Comedy Festival Show "Almost Lesbians"  well she is back this year with a one woman show called "Woman of the Hour".  We chat about the development of the show,  the development of the over 30 characters she plays and the fact for every "one woman" show there is a whole lot of supportive people behind her.

Elevan O'Clock #40 - Mamas’ Little Gayby


I probably can't describe Courtney's show any better than her poster - its about " Growing up in the 90s with lesbian mums and finding her own Queer in her heteronormative being" .  

Yes there is a lot to unpack in that, and through our conversation we do.  I think the biggest lesson I took from meeting Courtney is don't let other's define you.  Figure out your own definition and be proud of it!

Elevan O'Clock #39 - Adam Fawcett - Become the One




In this episode I talk to playwright Adam Fawcett about the development of his play "Become the One".  The play looks at the burgeoning relationship become and Australian Rules Footballer and the young man who has captured his attention.  "Become the One" won the 2018 Midsumma Staged reading competition and this year returns to the Midsumma Festival with a fully staged production.  Adam, and the show's director Lyall, discuss the development of the show and what it takes to be an independent theatre company in Australia.

Elevan O'Clock #37 - Raven



Raven has been one of Australia's leading boylesque performers for the last decade,  even winning Mr Boylesque Australia in 2012. He has been at the forefront of boylesque growing from a handful of Australian performers to Australian boylesque troupes touring the world.  His knowledge of the history of burlesque is the roots of his performance and believes it is important to know where you've come from to know where you're going.
